It was once thought impossible to transfer the highest culinary standards of the West and East to a tropical island in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Yet this became a reality with the opening of the Reethi Rah resort by One&Only four years ago. Dining under the stars with a view over the sea is not only incredibly romantic, the food and wine in this resort match the best you could eat anywhere on the planet.
Signature fusion
The signature Reethi Restaurant is a fusion affair that effortlessly turns out anything from French favorites like duck and fois gras to spicey Asian dishes, and excellent a la carte breakfasts. The finest ingredients arrive daily from around the world, although the fish is naturally local.
Turn to the sommelier for advice on the wine and the choice is as deep as your pocket can stretch. But for those not after a rare Petrus vintage there are some well considered cheaper options, like an Alsatian Riesling to go with the fois gras.
For Japanese guests and lovers of this national cuisine the Tepasake is the place for you, a restaurant built over the water and with sharks swimming in front. The fixed menu runs from sushi to sashimi and wagyu beef, with daily deliveries from Tokyo as well as a wide variety of sakis from which to choose.
Talented chef
Young Irish Executive Chef Paul Doyle is clearly a man to watch as he has succeeded in improving on the already high standards of the opening four years ago. The menus have gotten longer, and the food just seems tastier.
For a final treat no guest at the Reethi Rah should miss Fandithas where the Lebanese and Middle Eastern influence is obvious. Mezzas and dips with the restaurant’s own Iranian bread can be followed by chargrilled lobster and calamari, accompanied by perhaps a fine chilled rose or champagne.
Fandithas is right on the beach front so you have the sky above you and the sound of the breaking waves to chill out. After dinner there is a majlis on which to take shisha and coffee under the stars.
