Flying BA Club World from Dubai to Vancouver

Posted on 26 July 2010 with no comments from readers

Easily the best flight option for flying from Dubai to Vancouver is the British Airways’ service via Heathrow. Emirates is still arguing with the Canadian Government for a direct flight from Dubai.

The British Airways’ Club World or Business Class is a superb product with a recently introduced flat bed seat that allows for great privacy, somewhat similar to the cabins found in Etihad and Emirates’ First Class.

Comfortable seating

It was much better than the Cathay Pacific Business Class seats that are rather claustrophobically stacked in a herringbone pattern, and do not allow you to have a window seat as in BA. Go for the upper deck of the 747 and you have a completely separate Business Class compartment. Prices are also low now on BA as a result of the ongoing industrial action by cabin staff.

Not that this has impacted on the always highly professional service. There was no forgotten menu as on my last Business Class flight with Emirates back from The Seychelles.

The downside is that no staff member looked under 35 and a few appeared close to retirement age. It is a bid sad that staff can cling on to these jobs and deny younger people this opportunity, and then demand high salaries that keep profits in the red.

The newish seats are great. Not only do you get a more comfortable bed and privacy, you have a neat work room or private dining zone. And the food is very good indeed. Everything appears freshly cooked on fine china, and there is a good choice of meals.

Meal disappointments

Sadly when you do choose a meal it is not always available, and the same can be said of the impressive wine list. The video system is also limited in comparison to the vast selection of options on Etihad and Emirates’ flights, and the screen a bit blurred.

That said BA Club World is a class act. The staff may be ageing gracefully but they know their job extremely well. The 747s are also getting old but still a spacious transatlantic carrier. The newish seating definitely rocks.

And for transits in London the new Terminal 5 lounges are first rate, although the south lounge has rather more natural light. A shower without queuing was quickly sorted. And you could eat and drink well before getting on to the fight if you felt so inclined.
