Speaking absolutely no English and sporting a magnificent moustasche, Pascal Tepper – recently acclaimed the Best Baker in France by President Sarkozy, opened his first bakery outside his native land in Dubai last night. The French Ambassador and friends gathered to give his large premises in the Dubai Media Cty a traditional welcome.
Why choose Dubai for this opening, and not on a modest scale either? Why not ‘business friendly Bahrain’? Or one of the host of other countries around the world offering le help to such entrepreneurs?
Global positioning
Well, nobody needs much explanation about avoiding Bahrain these days. But Monsieur Tepper has chosen Dubai for positive reasons.
In an expansive address, translated by an interpreter, he explained his vision of Dubai as the start of his global baking empire with two more shops in the UAE before he goes on to conquer the world. The Dubai Media City is also not a bad place to start.
Consider the gastronomes of the free zone at lunchtime, the trays of sandwiches for meetings and the nearby towers of the Dubai Marina, one of the world’s most densely populated districts, or it soon will be when the towers fill up. A large, affluent and hungry community is surely the first requirement for making a bakery shop a success.
Nice shop
ArabianMoney liked the shop which is actually a large cafe next to the landmark Radisson Blu Hotel. ‘Our first job on Monday morning will be to get the air-conditioning working,’ announced the manager, managing to get both the day of the week and the weekend muddled up.
But the real test was the product. Bread and patisserie mixtures are flown in from Paris, so what you get is the same as you would eat gazing at the Eiffel Tower. There are also delicious original French chocolates and ice-cream, and a coffee bar. Naturally pride-of-place goes to la baguette and the apricot tartes are very tasty.
If you wanted to takeover the world of bakery then starting a large outlet in the middle of Dubai Media City would seem a very sensible option. Bonne chance Monsieur Tepper!
