Hotel Review: Movenpick Deira, newest hotel in the old downtown

New hotels continue to open in Dubai but the Movenpick Hotel Deira is actually the first new five-star property on this side of the Creek to be launched for a decade.

It’s a classic Movenpick business hotel with a few novel twists. The location not 10 minutes from the Dubai International Airport is very much in its favor, although if you’re looking to visit the Old Gold Souk and see the dhows cruising the Creek this is also a good choice.

Modern decor

The ultra-modern lobby area is designed to appeal to a younger crowd and so too are its trendy bar and modern Asian Wok In restaurant. The latter is actually worth a separate visit.

Fresh ingredient are prepared and cooked at a live cooking station in the centre of the restaurant. ArabianMoney can recommend the roasted duck pancakes and excellent dim-sum, and as this is a licensed restaurant you can enjoy a glass of wine with your meal that would not be possible in similar roadside places in Deira.

However, the prices are still very reasonable for Asian cuisine of this quality. For breakfast and other meals there is also an international buffet restaurant.

The 216 new rooms are equipped to a high-standard with Nespresso machines, iPod docking stations and Sony Bravia flatscreen TVs. DVD machines are available on request. There is a full bouquet of international TV channels.

Spacious accommodation

Bathrooms are spacious with large walk-in showers, twin-handbasins and a tub with shower. You have a great deal of storage space and a very comfortable bed. Stay in one of the 12 executive suites and you have your own lounge and dining space.

For business meetings you have a choice of seven natural-light meeting rooms and a business centre with full services. The general standard of staff service is high in this hotel with a genuine desire to please and be helpful.

On the rooftop is a full-length swimming pool and sun deck, as well as a sizeable gym with the latest equipment. It’s not a formula that is devastatingly original but it is all fresh and new, and prices are very good for the standard of accommodation on offer.
