With the demise of many regional financial and economic conferences in the wake of the global financial crisis, Hedge Funds World Middle East stands out as the annual event still well worth attending.

Star billing at this year’s conference from March 7-10th goes to Dr. Nouriel Roubini, the New York University professor who first predicted the US housing and subprime crisis. But there is an impressively large speaker faculty for this conference (click here).

Changing fortunes

The fortunes of the Hedge Funds World Middle East has followed the ups and downs of the region over the past 12 years. At the height of the Dubai boom a few years it was almost impossible to get through the door. More recent events have been much more subdued but have still attracted quality investors and funds.

Networking is always a big part of this conference with key meetings on the sidelines between the biggest players. But the event itself is also an education into what the smart money is doing right now, whether rightly or wrongly.

It is also a conference where the speakers are worth listening to, something that is not always the case when visiting speakers merely parrot their standard speech. For in fast moving financial markets those who do not change their position often perish.

Local speakers are widely drawn from Sanjeev Agarwala, CFO of Habtoor Group, one of the largest family offices in the region to Matein Khalid, an advisor to the Abu Dhabi royal family, and Daniel Booth who looks after hedge fund investment for Saudi Aramco.

Hedge funds

Of course there is a legion of talent from global hedge funds: Steven Bell, chief economist of GLC, Scott Lawin, COO at Moore Capital, Brian Luck, founding partner of Optimus and Stephen Oxley, MD at Fund of Hedge Funds at Pacific Alternative Asset Management. Then there are less well known names like Courtenay Wolfe of Salida Capital.

Not surprisingly emerging markets and commodities are going to recieve rather more attention at this year’s conference, alongside a comprehensive review of the recent performance and outlook for funds across all investment classes.

What is the ‘new normal’? Has it changed since the term was coined? This is the event for the smarter investor.
